MY STORY

My name is Margarita Teresa of Austria. I was born on July 12, 1651. Daughter of Philip IV and Mariana of Austria, I am known as "La Menina" thanks to the painting by D. Diego de Velázquez who immortalized me alongside my family and my ladies-in-waiting (the meninas) when I was only five years old.

In 1663, at the age of twelve, I was betrothed to marry my uncle, Emperor Leopold I of Habsburg, my mother's brother. Due to the death of my father D. Philip IV and for political reasons and succession rights, the wedding was not celebrated until April 25, 1666, and by proxy.

My journey to Vienna lasted six months, where I was received by the emperor, who celebrated my arrival with splendid festivities.

Unfortunately, my life was short. I had four children, two boys and two girls. However, only one survived me: Maria Antonia of Austria. On March 12, 1673, giving birth to my fourth daughter, I left this world at only twenty-two years old.

They say you die when you enter the tunnel of oblivion, but that is not my case.

An icon of Madrid, I always aroused curiosity. I was the subject of multiple studies about the symbolisms contained in Velázquez's painting, entitled "Las Meninas" exhibited in the Prado Museum.

My body remained in Austria, in the Capuchin crypt in Vienna, but my spirit returned to Madrid, and here I remain ever-present, giving people something to talk about and serving as inspiration for new artists.
